Milestone to be celebrated by Hassocks Badminton Club

Hassocks Badminton Club are celebrating their 40th birthday this season, which is a fabulous achievement.

The club was formed by four local Hassocks families (the Tingley’s, the Shepherd’s, the Clifford’s and the Dummer’s).

Our original home venue was Keymer village hall, but the requirement for a little more height, meant we moved to Hurstpierpoint Village Centre in the 80’s, playing on a roll away court!

As membership at the club flourished and as we moved up the leagues, we realised we needed a multi-centre facility - not least because it was commonplace for matches to finish around 1am at that time!

Our current home venue is St Paul’s Catholic school, Burgess Hill, opposite the Triangle - a fabulous 4 court hall facility. Club night is Wednesday evening 8-10pm. We also play some matches on Thursday at Henfield leisure centre, but they are always finished by 10.30pm !

The ethos of the Club is very simple in that we look to support and compete at the top level in the local leagues, and provide a friendly Club night as well as encouraging younger players - this has served us well over the last 40 years. We currently have Mens, Mixed and Ladies teams competing in Brighton and Mid Sussex Division 1.

On the social side of things we have organised events like quiz nights, treasure hunts, and fun family evenings.

This year, in part to celebrate our 40th birthday, the Club is organising on the 21st March a Hoedown at Downlands School at 19.30. For further details and tickets contact Penny Radford at or telephone 07714 545328. You are all very welcome - no badminton skills required !

For further details on this event and the club in general, please check out our website, or our Facebook page.

Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported the Club in either a playing or non playing capacity over the last 40 years - we couldn’t do it without you. Roll on the next 40 years !
