On Wednesday 10th June, Southway Junior School in Burgess Hill hosted the annual Burgess Hill Singing Event.
It was an opportunity to bring together children from schools across the locality to have a morning of gospel singing.
The event was attended by 155 pupils from the six Burgess Hill locality schools – Birchwood Grove County Primary School, London Meed Primary School, Manor Field Primary School, Sheddingdean Community Primary School, St Wilfrid’s Catholic Primary School, and Southway Junior School.
The singing was led and accompanied on the piano by Emily Barden, Leader for Singing and Projects for West Sussex Music, who said of the event, ‘This was a great opportunity for children across the Burgess Hill Locality to have the opportunity to sing as a massed choir and explore harmony. The sound that they made was soulful, fantastic and full of joy.’
The event was co-ordinated by Mrs Moleton, Year 3 Teacher / Music Co-Ordinator at Southway, who said, ‘The sound and performance that the children produced was incredible. They could be heard throughout the school! It was a wonderful morning.’
The morning was a fantastic success and many of the pupils said what a great experience it had been, particularly singing gospel together with so many children for the first time. It was another excellent example of how local schools in Burgess Hill are collaborating to provide an enriching and inclusive curriculum for the pupils.
Emily Barden commented ‘It was a great morning and we will certainly look to hold another event next year’.
