On Monday May 23, 20 Explorer Scouts from Greensands and Knights Explorer units in Mid Sussex ventured out in to Burgess Hill and carried out a chip shop survey, visiting nine local ‘chippys’ and fast food restaurants in the town.

Their challenge was to try and find the best chippy in town and to try and talk their way into a free portion of chips whilst they were there. A challenge these 14-18 year old embraced and quite literally ran with!

All shops except one large fast food chain contributed a couple of free portions to try and fed up our hungry Explorer scouts in the process.

The results found that the fast food restaurants, although the chips were 20p-30p cheaper for a portion, they were in fact much smaller portions, too greasy and not enough flavour. Whereas, the chip shops where full of flavour, good seasoning, the shops where tidier and the overall value was much better. Each shop in the top three also graciously welcomed our Explorers and entertained our evening’s activities.

The top three where:

1st place – Jupps Fish and Chips, West Street

2nd place – Tim Leys – Lower church Road

3rd place - Royal Fish Bar, Leylands Road
