Back in the early 1970s, a young solicitor decided that he wanted to undertake some charitable work.

Reading the Middy one week, he saw an advertisement for someone to act as honorary secretary for the Mid-Sussex Mencap local Society.

This local society had been formed in the mid 1950s and recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.

That young solicitor was John Drake. John duly applied for the post, was appointed, and continued to act as the honorary secretary of Mid-Sussex Mencap for over 45 years. Recently, at the Society’s 2015 AGM, John announced his resignation from the committee.

Throughout John’s 45 years with the society, John was a strong support and friend to the committee and through his valuable expert advice and guidance John helped the society to work to improve the lives people with a learning disability and their parents and carers in Mid-Sussex, balancing his voluntary work with his work in a busy solicitor’s office.

John and his input will be much missed and he left the society with heartfelt thanks for all his work over the past 45 years and everyone’s wishes for an enjoyable ‘retirement’.

Mid-Sussex Mencap now needs to recruit a new committee member to act as its honorary secretary. Over the years, the role of secretary has changed with developments in technology, particularly the move from letters to e-mails.

The main tasks of our secretary will be to contribute to the committee’s work as a full member; take committee meeting minutes and prepare agendas (for about 5 to 6 meetings a year and the AGM) and circulate any correspondence (electronic or paper). Other tasks include maintaining our archives, and, along with our treasurer, maintaining our insurance cover and membership list.

Anyone interested in becoming our secretary can telephone Peter Evans (the chairman) on 01444 471431 .
