Tuesday 2nd December saw eight students from St Paul’s Catholic College travel to Dorset House School in Bury to take part in the South of England Heat of the Kid’s Lit Quiz.
The winners of this regional heat would go on to compete at the National Finals in London, and the winners this would go on to represent the UK in the World Finals in the USA.
The competition in this event is fierce with teams from schools including Portsmouth Grammar and Windlesham House all looking for success. This was the first time students from St Paul’s Catholic College had competed in the Kids Lit Quiz and in the end they were unlucky to not win the heat. The eventual result was second place, losing out to Portsmouth Grammar by only 2 points!
The event was a great experience for the students and showed they have the literary skills and knowledge to compete with anyone. After setting such a high standard we now have high hopes of continued success next year. Maybe even going one better and becoming the southern area champions.
The St Paul’s students involved in the event were Elizabeth Greenwood-Spicer, Liam Brown, Maria Bilton, Lucy Griffiths, Kaitlin Griffin (all Year 8), Isaac Boniface, Mareena Joseph and Rose Kasprzak (Year 7).
The Kids Lit Quiz is an annual literature competition for children aged 10 to 13. It puts readers onto the stage and lets them compete for fantastic prizes. The quiz has heats in New Zealand, the UK, South Africa, Canada, USA, China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia.
