The group matches of this U13 tournament saw Warden Park winning all their games against Windlesham House B team, St Christopher’s, and St Andrews.
In the quarter final against Great Walstead they raced ahead to a 15-0 lead only to see the opposition pulling back to 15-14.
Warden Park held on to their lead, however, going through to meet Brighton College in the semi final, which after an impressive display of rugby skills, they won 28-5.
Oliver Kerr, Alex Green, Frasier Lawson all showed their pace, scoring throughout the day. Winning the ball and turning over scrums was due to the inspirational captain, Finn Connellan who was well supported by Ben Wright and Tom McCall. The scrum halfs, Evan Herbert and Luke Minett, linked the play well.
Windlesham House A team had won their semi-final 28-0 so Warden Park knew they were facing stiff opposition in the final.
Owen Ratcliffe got Warden Park on the scoreboard from the first kick of the match, making a stunning, crowd-pleasing run the length of the field.
The opposition responded, pressing into Warden Park’s twenty two and, by half time the score was equal at 7-7.
Once again Owen Ratcliffe, who was named player of the day, showed his pace and agility to take Park to 12-7. Great work from the forwards saw Minett push the score to 17-7 but Windlesham hit straight back with their own pace man.
George Jeavons, scoring 5 tries during the course of the day, almost sealed the victory for Warden Park but a turn over on the Park try line gave Windlesham the scrum from which they scored on the final whistle to win 19-17 . So near, yet so far for Warden Park!
