On Wednesday 25th March the Warden Park Year 7 Netball team travelled to St Pauls to play Downlands in the Mid Sussex State Schools Final.
This was a rematch, as the previous final failed to reach a conclusion following extra time AND the “golden goal”.
Despite the absence of both their usual Wing Defence due to illness and the Centre, who had broken her finger during a PE lesson two hours beforehand, the A team pulled together with remaining squad members.
Outstanding defence from Mimi Rose Fyne, Sophie Burton and Izzy Johnson restricted Downlands’ shots at goal and this proved pivotal, with the half time score at 4-3 to Warden Park.
However, with the effects of the first undecided final now taking their toll and three of the team playing out of position, the girls were tired and knew that Downlands had the opportunity to come back strong.
During a tense second half, Suzanne Green proved she had the fitness needed as Centre, bridging excellently between defence and attack. Lucy Fearn linked nicely with the shooters and, with Eloise Young and Josie Starkey scoring when it counted, Warden Park went on to win 6-4.
Congratulations to the Year 7 squad, (which also includes Ella Lucas, Belinda Riley, Ella Couves and Emily Day). They now go on to represent Mid Sussex at the Sussex School Games in July.
