For a whole week in June, the students and local community in Hassocks and Hurstpierpoint enjoyed The Downlands Literary Festival.
From reading and writing workshops with children’s author Sheila Rance, sessions with Biblio-Therapist Ella Berthoud (co-author of “The Novel Cure”), to a wonderful afternoon in Adastra Park for the Community Park Read!
On a glorious summers afternoon the Park Read was attended by young and old, sharing books and taking part in the exciting story journey with actors Claire Sundin and Katie Foster-Barnes.
The students were also lucky enough to welcome Dan Freedman, sports journalist, former FA guru and children’s author to the school for Reading Champions where Dan told the children and their families about his love of books and football. He told them how he felt that books were a key part of life and how it could even be the key to England winning the World Cup!
Performance poet, Joshua Seigal held some wonderful sessions with the Year 7 students – the focus on his favourite word, “Goo”, lead to some fabulous participation by the year 7 students in his poem by the same name.
But best of all, the whole school enjoyed our treasured “Drop Everything and Read” session – 15 minutes a day when the whole school, Mrs Hetherton (Headteacher) included, stopped what they were doing and read! Perfect!
We are looking forward to next year’s Literary Festival already.
