“He spent two days by his self on a stool and raised a massive £1769.83, in one weekend. I was working at the customer service desk and watched him do this.

“We asked him if he would like to have lunch with the staff but he said no thank you as he brought a packed lunch and wanted to raise as much money as he can.”

Mr Owen was supposed to have help with his fund raising, but when it did not turn up he continued alone.

“The customers were so taken with Mr Owen that when they finished their shopping they went back to talk to him again,” Jenny continued.

“I know mr Owen has many plans for fund raising this year and if you see him around please give him all the support you can, and why is he as charming as I say he is... Well with my donation I got a kiss!!

Mr Owen sent Sainsbury’s a letter thanking them for allowing him to collect near their store.

“They were very long hours as no helpers arrived but nevertheless very fruitful for the charity as the total collected for the charity was an absolutely amazing sum of £1,769.83 however you look at it this is a fabulous amount and indicates the charitable feelings amongst those customers who shop at Sainsbury’s, Haywards Heath,” it read.

“On behalf of our wounded servicemen and women I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generosity in thinking of them.”
