West Sussex garden centres reopen as police warn over excessive queuing - in pictures

Sussex Police have issued a warning for green-fingered shoppers to stay safe after garden centres reopened amid lockdown easing.

Garden centres across West Sussex were greeted with queues this morning (May 13) following the announcement at the weekend that some prohibited activities are no longer under lockdown restrictions. Garden centres have come to represent something of a symbol of freedom amid the coronavirus lockdown and Sussex Police issued a statement yesterday asking shoppers to respect social distancing, be patient and mindful. Queues were expected to be so long that police urged people not to join a queue that had already stretched into the road, but these pictures show demand may have been overestimated. With many people also encouraged to return to work, but avoid public transport, the county’s true enthusiasm for its garden centres may become clearer over the weekend.
