LETTER: Anti-EU polemic

Mr French (letters Thursday May 5th) makes a valid point regarding the use of taxpayers’ money to pay for what is in effect government propaganda.

However, his anti-EU polemic is no substitute for the reasoned argument that your readers so much need to help them make a decision about this contentious, complicated and confusing issue.

The Green Party believes that the benefits of EU membership such as workers’ rights, cleaner beaches and air, funding of deprived areas in the UK, cross border tackling of tax evasion and cooperation on climate change outweigh the many well recognised problems associated with a top-heavy bureaucracy. And, crucially, it insists that we can only fight for the vitally necessary reforms to EU structures and policies from within.

People qualified to speak authoritatively on economics and trade seem to be equally divided between those in favour of Brexit and advocates for Remain. It seems, however, to be widely accepted that the EU provides our best defence against the power of the (unelected and unaccountable) multinational corporations. Arguments about migration tend to conflate free movement of labour for EU citizens with the refugee crisis. The Green Party believes that the necessity to control our borders is no excuse for lack of compassion towards desperate fugitives from persecution and conflict.

So Green Party members will be voting to remain in Europe on 23rd June, but we do not pretend that the choice is an easy or straightforward one. Nor do we seek to dismiss the arguments of those who disagree with us as ‘desperately defending the indefensible’.
