LETTER: Free parking could help small shops

I wonder how many of your readers noticed the recent story in the national papers concerning the town of Cardigan in Mid Wales which had all its pay-and-display machines put out of action by vandals.

The result was that the High Street shopkeepers reported a great improvement in turnover, up in some cases by 50 per cent.

What a shame that at the beginning of the year Burgess Hill Town Council rejected a petition, led by Labour, of over 1,500 residents calling for a free three hours parking system in the town centre. Also UKIP has been calling for two hours free parking in their local manifesto for a number of years.

I believe some other councils in Sussex, such as Bexhill and Midhurst, have introduced a period of free parking and have seen the benefit. It has also worked in Hurst and Hassocks.

With limited free parking there would be more shoppers, fewer empty shops, more business rates for the council and a brighter future for Burgess Hill.
