LETTER: Heart of Burgess Hill destroyed

I was disappointed to learn that the councillors of Mid Sussex District Council have decided to ignore the wishes of thousands of local residents, and the principles of the new neighbourhood plan, by approving the ill-conceived and poorly designed scheme by New River Retail for the redevelopment of Burgess Hill Town Centre.

The proposal destroys the cultural and social heart of the community by not providing a replacement for the Martlets Hall and offers only a small, remotely located, sub-library to serve a town with an ever growing population.

Many people may remember a different environmental disaster that befell this country in 1967 – The Torrey Canyon disaster.

In memory of our esteemed councillors I suggest that the narrow and bleak high sided access way from Church Walk to the car park, should be named ‘The Tory Canyon’.

In addition that the insignificant events area be called ‘Garry Wall’s Hall’ in recognition of the council leader responsible for the downgrading of Burgess Hill to the status of a poor relation to Haywards Heath and East Grinstead.
