LETTER: Kafka-esque nightmare

How thrilling to see your front page (Southern feels the heat, September 29).

As a commuter from Balcombe, I feel I’m in some dark Kafka-esque nightmare. The service to and from our village station is so appalling now, EVERY week, with delays, cancellations and now fewer trains stopping, that even when the RMT go on strike, it makes absolutely no difference.

We are exhausted by the complacency, the lack of any strategy or leadership. Our family and business lives so damaged by late trains, cancellations, hours snatched from us - and all at such a financial cost!

How is it, in the rich south east that we don’t even have a partially decent service? People say it’s like the Third World but actually I think it’s probably worse.

How is it that it’s acceptable just recently for the government to give millions to Southern to sort out the mess and within 48 hours they post profits of 100 million?

What in God’s name has happened to this country.

J Harris
