LETTER: Lucky to have hands-on mayor

May I spring to the defence of the mayor of Haywards Heath, Cllr Sujan Wickremaratchi, who was criticised in a letter last week for featuring in five photographs on one page in the previous week’s issue.

As a former Fleet Street journalist who cut his teeth on weekly papers, I know full well – and I’m sure most readers do to - that any mayor or other VIP/celebrity does not choose what photographs are used on any page or indeed how many there are.

The idea that Mr Wickremaratchi posed for photos (no doubt at the photographer’s request) in the hope of appearing five times on the same page is of course plain daft.

He is an extremely active, hands-on mayor, and we in Haywards Heath are lucky to have him. It seems churlish to attack him just because a salt bin he promised has not arrived. I feel sure he has done what he can to get the bin, and the delay is not his fault. He has certainly proved to be very helpful to my wife and myself in getting things done or put right!
