I was pleased to see that our MP has spearheaded a special meeting between members of parliament and those who run the the railways.
Unfortunately they seem to have overlooked the need to talk to the unions, who represent the staff. It is no good producing a magic formula for improving the service, if the staff responsible for implementing their ideas have not been consulted.
What is needed is a “no strike” agreement, like the ones which Japanese car makers have with their unions. In return for relinquishing their right to strike the staff all receive an annual bonus, based on the annual profit figures. If the unions feel part of such a plan to give a better service, with no strikes, they have an incentive to work hard and do their best. Any problems or disagreements can go to arbitration, with a special committee made of two representatives from the management, and two from the unions. Everyone stands to gain if the business succeeds.
