As a WW2 baby, I found it sad that the so-called silence at 3pm on VE Day was “more honoured in the breach than in the observance” (Shakespeare, a great Englishman, centuries before another one!)
However, its existence was much less well-publicised than it should have been. I conducted a personal, admittedly non-demographic brief poll on the afternoon, and NONE of the 20 people approached had even heard about it.
Indeed, one woman I asked was moved to say words to the effect of “got better things to do”. Great!
