Big year ahead of Saints bowler

It promises to be a big year ahead for St Francis bowler Colin Morphew, who has been elected president of Sussex County Bowls Association men’s section.

Morphew first started bowling in the late 1980s when he joined Wealden Indoor Bowls Club at Maresfield.

Outdoor bowling followed in 1997, firstly at Beech Hurst Park for one season and then at fellow Haywards Heath club St Francis, where he was joined by some of his indoor colleagues.

Colin was chairman of St Francis for nine years and has twice held the important role of club captain.

Three years ago he became match secretary for the Mid Sussex Bowls League, which comprises 24 local clubs. He still holds this position.

Colin said: “Outdoor bowls has given me a lot of enjoyment in the past 14 years and I would like to be able to give something back.”

His challenge, along with his fellow county officers in partnership with the Bowls Development Association and Active Sussex, will be to continue the push for new members while at the same time retaining those already playing.

An annual survey has just signposted Sussex as one of five key areas in the country for bowls. And this year the Commonwealth Games come to Scotland in July, giving the sport, which features prominently, a major boost.

A full programme of inter-county matches has been arranged for 2014.
