Jones said: “It was really good. Obviously a little bit of a slip-up in the first round, caught me with a silly shot. There’s no hiding from it.

“It’s one of those things, we are not to tickle each other! It could have been him.”

Jones praised his opponent who is a former European title contender and led the fight in the early stages.

He said: “The guy was a tough, strong lad. He caught me with a left hook, a glancing one really, obviously cut my eye open which put me two points down but I moved on.”

Jones revealed: “I’m super-fit and think about my boxing a bit more and was ready for those looping left-hands but didn’t know where they would come from.

“As soon as he done it I knew where exactly they were coming from and changed my boxing from there.

“He was exactly the same I thought he’d be. He didn’t come forward as much as I thought. My body shots slowed him down a lot and made him breath heavy.

“He was a top class amateur who fought for his country.

“He tried to out-box me but actually I found I out-boxed him, so it didn’t work for him that way neither.

“I was putting pressure on him and trying to out-box him as well.”
