Burgess Hill Runners gather for Black Cap Handicap Race

Burgess Hill Runners gathered in perfect conditions at Ditchling Beacon on Wednesday evening for their annual Black Cap Handicap Race.

The race, which is over some five and a quarter miles from the car park to the Black Cap trig point and back, sees runners set off in reverse order with handicaps based on previous race times, the aim being that all runners finish more or less together.

Race Director James Sorbie put an immense amount of work into calculating expected finishing times of the 57 runners that took part and did a superb job, as around 40 of the 57 finished within 2 mins of their predicted time.

Winner on the night was Jenny Nicholl, 4mins 34s inside her predicted time (actual time 50m 56s), 2nd was Jan Lavis 4.23 inside (actual time 39.22) and third Joe Carey 3.09 (actual time 34.06).
