Cricket: Remfry breaks record... Eagles fly into final

Horley batsman Ben Remfry hit a club record individual score of 177 in the penultimate game of the season and helped the club take the Surrey Championship Challenge Cup Group7 title.

Remfry opened in the home match against Caterham and, having marked his 18th birthday with a century two days earlier, picked up where he had left off, hitting 177 from 145 balls.

He struck 22 fours and five sixes as he dominated the strike. Horley finished on 241-3 from 40 overs.

They bowled Caterham out for 85 with Charlie Robins, Jordan Robins, Kieran Childs and Adam Stephenson taking two wickets each and Regan Derham and Aryan Patel one apiece.

Club records go back to 1956 and have 174 not out from Richard Bradford in 1996 as the previous competitive highest score by a Horley batsman. Remfry has been in the form of his life of late, scoring five centuries in 12 innings. Since July 11 Remfry has amassed 1116 runs in 19 innings at an average of 74.

The victory over Caterham left Horley top with one match to go and they finished the season unbeaten by snatching a win from the jaws of defeat at Croydon.

Horley 2nd XI lost their last Challenge Cup match of the season by 32 runs to Croydon and ended up fifth.

Top-of-the-table Old Whitgiftians proved too good for the Horley Development XI in the Surrey Trust League, beating them by 65 runs.

Crawley Eagles 2nd v Ansty 2nd

Eagles second XI moved in the final of their section of the August Cup with a four-wicket win over Ansty twos.

Ansty were looking at a big score at 155-0 with openers Tommy Green (60) and Chris Barnes (86) going well, but tight bowling from spinners Wazoomi Wahid (3-27) and Ali Yousef (1-27) restricted the total to 205-4.

In reply the Eagles openers put on 88 which helped the middle-order stroke players play their natural game.

Eagles got to their target in 34 overs and captain Imran Habeebullahkhan hit the winning run to take the team into the final on Saturday.

He said: “This was a great team effort – all the players played a vital role in this win.We look forward to the final.”
