In-form Iain leads way for Saintsbut weather finally wins the day

With the first team on a rest week, all eyes focused on the 2nd XI’s top-of-the-table clash with RMU at Wish Road, where the weather had the final say.

After being put in, the in-form Iain Murray hit 82 and gave the innings a solid start with Nick Elkins (26) before first team skipper JJ Davies added 54.

They declared on 200-8 after 46 overs but only 1.3 overs into the home team’s reply, the rain came to wash out the fixture.

Both the first and second teams are without a league game this Saturday.

The 3rd team failed to keep up with the required rate in a rain-affected game at Barns Green II and lost on scores after 25 overs.

Rich Ager (5-72) and Edwin Dale (3-38) picked up wickets as the hosts chanced their arm to reach 239 all out in their 40 overs. Saints had progressed to 105-3 when rain and poor light forced the players off after 25 overs.

After a momentous victory over Nomads in the semi final, Saints Under 12s followed up by beating St James’s by eight wickets in the League Cup final, where the beaten side played in a great spirit and Rottingdean CC proved perfect hosts, even producing a programme.

A fine spell of spin bowling from Thomas Cooper and Jack Hobby helped keep St James’s in check and midway through their 20 overs they had mustered only 34.

Owen May then lifted the run rate before being bowled by Ollie Byatt and a total of 106-5 proved comfortable for the St Andrews batsmen.

Archie Hall was in need of some runs after a disappointing season and he duly obliged with 25 not out as opening partner Jack Cooper (23) played his usual anchor role.

Thomas Cooper (24) then played beautifully with his brother at the other end as an eight-wicket win was completed with six overs to spare.
