Horsham Cricket Club have announced that Chris Nash, one of their favourite sons, will be returning to play for the town side next season.

The hugely experienced pro cricketer has played over 500 matches in county shirts, beginning with Sussex before moving on to Nottinghamshire for the last three seasons.

Since debuting for Sussex in 2002, highly dependable right hand opener Nash has amassed almost 20,000 runs across all formats, scoring 27 hundreds along the way, and he has taken 175 wickets with his more than handy off spin bowling. In addition to playing for England Lions, Nash has captained both Sussex and Notts on occasions and has played for top sides in New Zealand and South Africa, too

Horsham Cricket Chairman Richard Marshall told the County Times: “This is a great signing for us – Chris began playing for us under our colts programme as a 7 year old, and he was in the side with his brother Mark when we won the National Cup at Lord’s in 2005. Chris is a very popular member here and his experience will be of great benefit to the club.”

Vice Captain Ben Williams added: “It’s fantastic to have Chris back at his childhood club! He’ll be an enormous help in our bid to return to the Sussex Premier League and next season he could be taking the field with our other home grown Sussex cricketers past and present - Will Beer, Tom Clark, Tom Haines and Michael Thornely.”

In the last full season Williams was the leading bowler throughout the whole of the Sussex League, and, along with Horsham’s mature regulars and emerging talent, the club should be a strong prospect for promotion.

After attending Horsham’s Heron Way School and Collyers, Nash enjoyed earning silverware with both Sussex and Notts, and says: “I can’t wait to get a Horsham shirt on again, I haven’t played since 2009 due to my county commitments, so it’ll be great to go home and get back to a place that I love so much. Seeing Horsham in the second tier (of Sussex cricket) is obviously hard, so it’s about building a team that can go back to the Premier League and have sustained success for the next 5-10 years.”

Nash continued: “For me, my primary role is to make sure that the club is in a stronger place and has a group of players who can make the first team successful long term. Obviously scoring runs and taking some wickets will be important but hopefully I can help the players. Horsham is a special club, and in its 250th anniversary year it is a great time to get as many old and new faces into the club and enjoying all the teams playing good cricket and taking pride in representing Horsham.”

Chris Nash will be 38 at the start of next season and, and following the recent expiry of his three year contract with Nottinghamshire, being fit and playing great cricket, has said that he would like to stay in the professional T20 game for another two years.

Any county would do well to draw on Nash’s proven track record of achievement and Horsham Cricket Club’s players and supporters are greatly looking forward to having back playing for them in 2021.
