Haywards Heath Cricket Club take on Lands End to John O’Groats challenge for charity

The Sussex Cricket League Premier Division side have decided to take on the challenge of walking from Lands End to John O’Groats in just 28 days.

The whole club will be taking part and they can either walk, run or cycle their virtual way to John O’Groats.

And as well as getting fit and ready for the 2021 cricket season, they will be raising money for charity - and a new sight screen at the far Sydney Road end of the ground. The charities selected are Kangaroos (visit kangaroos.org.uk) and St Peter and St James Hospice (visit stpjhospice.org).

To put travelling from Lands End to John O’Groats in context, that’s 1,083 miles in 28 days, which is 38 miles a day, or the equivalent of 2707 laps of the path surrounding Clair Park.

The club are hoping to raise £1,083 (a £1 a mile) and have neared that total already.

Gary Honeysett from the club said: “We would encourage and appreciate any donations to to the challlenge.

“We’d love too see everyone at the club get involved so please run, walk and cycle with us February.”

Haywards Heath skipper Callum Smith said: “With no socialising we wanted to do something to keep everyone together.

“Lots of our players have taken to running cycling as a way of getting fit for the new season so we looked at this as an incentive to really push with the season on the horizon.”

Smith is also hoping to get a full season in this year after last season was reduced to the August Cup.

He said: “I am really hoping we can get started on time this year, everyone is pumped for a shot at the premier league.

“We picked up a couple of new lads last year who did well and we’re hoping to have our overseas back, but we all know how difficult that’s looking right now, so we are looking at a few options.”
