HORSHAM CRICKET FESTIVAL: Day One lunch - Notts 94-3

Nottinghamshire batsman Rikki Wessels led the fightback initiative after his side made a disastrous start to the opening day of their LV=County Championship match against Sussex at Horsham.

At lunch he was unbeaten on 45 and was part of an unbroken fourth wicket stand of 64 with James Taylor.

Notts finished the session on 94-3 after 29 overs with Wessels hitting a six off spinner Peter Burgoyne to mid-wicket and six other boundaries.

But Notts’ position had not looked so healthy in the opening overs as two wickets for Ollie Robinson and one for Matt Hobden reduced them to 30-3.

Notts had won the toss and elected to bat in sunny and warm conditions against a Sussex side who brought Peter Burgoyne into the starting XI, preferred to Asher Zaidi, who was 12th man.

Notts struggled against the Sussex seamers on a damp wicket at the start following early morning rain.

Chris Nash, returning to his former club, took a catch in the slips at the third attempt to take the first wicket to fall of Alex Hales off the bowling of Robinson.

Matt Hobden then took the second wicket in his very first over, getting Brendan Taylor out LBW for 7.

Notts’ scoring was very slow and the only memorable shot of the opening overs was a six by Steve Mullaney who hit Robinson into the pavilion.

Mullaney was next to go for just 15, caught behind by Ben Brown when pushing forward off Robinson as Notts were on 30-3.

Incoming batsman Wessels dug in with James Taylor to ensure no further wickets went over the next 15 overs to bring the score to a respectable 94-3 at lunch.
