Captain Stefan Hildreth had 10 players at 9am on Saturday for this West Sussex Invitation Cricket League Division 5 game. But at 12noon - 15 minutes before the meet time - he had three players drop out.

He wrote on his match report: “I was down to seven players, travelling an hour, to face Littlehampton, it was a choice of concede and lose 10 points, or turn up, try and have a game of cricket, and take what we can. “All six confirmed me they wanted to go, and “let’s have a laugh” and do our best, win the toss and bat a quick result for all, after all we did not want to be chasing the ball around for hours bowling first.

“Four players arrived just in time, so one of my players could go out and do the toss. Harry won the toss and elected to Bat, myself and the two other players arrived just in time to pad up for the start of the game, a much changed batting order, promotions all round, I was up from nine last week to three, our number 10 was up to five, and number 11 up to six this week.”

Hill amassed the impressive total of 204-3 with Michael Woodroffe (58), Peter Woodroffe (48), Hildreth (30), Harry Cocker (31 not out) and Andy Jones (14 not out) all contributing.

Littlehampton, who only had 9 batsmen, had posted 280 in their last two games. But they did not have an answer for the seven men of Scaynes Hill as they finished 121 all out.

Jonathan Hall claimed 5-63 and Andy Jones 2-28 as they pulled off an improbable victory.

Hildreth added a final note on his report. He said: “Athank you to the Littlehampton skipper who was a credit to his team, and also made the kind gesture to give the match ball to Johnny after the match for taking his five wickets and leading us to victory, a great gesture very much appreciated by all of us at Scaynes Hill.”

The seven players were Michael and Peter Woodroffe, Stefan Hildreth, Harry Cocker, Andy Jones, Matt Church and Jonathan Hall.
