The Aussie paceman ripped through the visiting batting order to claim career best figures of 8-20 as Somerset were bowled out for just 76 before tea.

Visiting captain Marcus Trescothick’s decision to bat first in overcast conditions having won the toss looked a strange one and Magoffin ran riot to claim best ever Sussex bowling figures against Somerset.

Magoffin struck first in the fourth over, bowling Arul Suppiah through the gate to send his middle stump somersaulting.

His next victim was Alviro Peterson with a delivery which nipped back from outside the off stump to strike the batsman low in front in the eighth over and then drew an edge from James Hildreth which Ben Brown took behind.

Chris Jordan came into the attack and trapped Alex Barrow leg before to make it a fine start before Magoffin claimed his next three wickets in four balls the following over.

Trescothick hung his bat out to edge behind for a big scalp, Peter Trego featered another to Brown behind the stumps two balls later and Magoffin’s next one was a jaffer to strike the leading pad and send Alfonso Thomas back in the clubhouse for a golden duck leaving the visitors reeling on 58-7.

A bouncer saw off Jack Leach as he gloved behind and his eight wicket cleaned out the off stump of Jos Buttler as he went to drive for a top Somerset score of just 22.

Jordan wrapped up a stunning morning’s work when he had Steve Kirby caught by Nash, and Sussex got in two overs before lunch to go in 13-0 with Chris Nash and Luke Wells at the crease.
