Spare a thought forChampagne Charlie

Being a top scoring batsman was generally well rewarded at the weekend but spare a thought for bowler Charlie Dowdall who took 8-67 and still ended a loser.

Dowdall was playing for Balcombe in a Mid Sussex League top division clash at home Streat. His Champagne show removed the visitors for 228 but Jules Hunt then followed up his 94 with 6-36 as Balcombe were bowled out for 182.

Ross Watkins hit the top score in Mid Sussex at the weekend and earned better reward as Keymer & Hassocks II successfully chased a big total at home to Burgess Hill II in the Sussex League.

Watkins had an early ‘life’ but batted superbly for his 140 as his side passed Hill’s impressive 247-2 to win by four wickets. That did, however, make Tom Penfold (100no) one of the weekend’s unlucky batsmen.

David Woodfield’s unbeaten 131 for Haywards Heath II certainly paid dividends in the 96-run victory over Chichester II.

Young Jonny Phelps took 5-51 in that match and was a double best of the week entry as the following day he struck 51 for Heath’s Sunday side. He ended a loser that day, however, as in a 40-over game Felbridge & Sunnyside romped past a total of 229-8 in only the 34th over to win by three wickets.

Tom Fairfax hit his third and highest ton when making 117 to help the Hassocks Sunday side to a 73-run 40-overs success at Buxted. He shared a third wicket stand of 152 with Jamie Purtell (54). The age range of the Hassocks side was an impressive 55 years, from 14 to 69.

Imthiyaz Ahamed (109 for Ardingly) and Tim Murrills (105no for Balcombe) were the other century makers at the weekend, while John Taylor Jnr took 5-5 for St James’s II and Lindfield’s Matt Wilson-Yelverton bettered that with 5-2 in a tight league win at Hellingly.
