Bridges won the toss and decided to bat on a flat Wivelsfield track. However, they struggled against the experience of Chris Tucker and the youthful pace of Oliver Byatt to lose 3 wickets for 39 in the first 10 overs.

As usual Saints bowlers were supported by some brilliant fielding, typified by a sharp piece of work by keeper, Adam Hills, to catch the Bridges opener, Adam Razzaq, out of his ground, before he could get going.

Bridges staged a recovery, with young batsmen, Harry Bryant (33) and Daniel Razzaq, both batting beautifully, with Razzaq particulary taking advantage of anything short or down the leg.

Ollie Byatt was the pick of the day’s bowlers, picking up 2 early wickets and bowling with good pace, but everyone made valuable contributions in the field, to restrict Bridges to 168 for 6 in their 40 overs.

After tea, the opening partnership of youth and experience, Jordan Cornford and Ray Cully looked comfortable until Jordan was bowled by a good one from young left arm pace bowler Charles Dennis. Rich Gacsall and Ray Cully then set about building a match winning partnership, with positive batting and gentle running. Rich, looked comfortable and was hitting strongly straight down the ground and was first to his 50. Ray soon followed, but was increasingly restricted by a bad back and the run rate dropped drastically. Pain finally forced Ray (59) to retire and Rich soon followed bowled for 60 by Tim Lunnon with 30 runs still required and 6 overs remaining.

However, Adam Hills (10*) and Ben Noble (19*) held their nerve and with positive batting Saints reached their target with an over to spare.

Put in to bat on a good batting track, Saints set off positively reaching 41 in the 8th over, before Stuart Savidge (21) played over the top of a straight one from Matt Church. However, at 50 for 1 after 10 overs, Saints looked set for a big score. Even though Saints lost 3 quick wickets, Owen Male and Michael Platt (14) kept the scoring rate high reaching 118 for 5 in the 20th over. However, the loss of Owen for 61 in the 22nd over put a brake on the scoring, and only an excellent 33 by Joe Russell steered Saints to an inadequate 168 all out in the 38th over.

Saints bowled and fielded tightly making Hill work hard for their runs, losing 3 wickets getting to 69 in the 19th over, but William Ash then pushed the scoring rate up hitting 4 sixes and 6 fours in his match winning 66, which saw Hill reach their target in the 35th over.

Saints through to the next round of the WSICL T20 cup

A youthful St Andrews T20 squad played two tough matches of T20 cricket at Sidney West on Sunday 28th June losing one to Chippingdale by 73 runs but then beating Broadbridge Heath by 5 wickets.

Chippingdale batted first and scored a daunting 197 for 4 with Aaron Tugnutt being the destroyer with a rapid 73 not out and 14 year old Archie Hill stepping up with 2 for 11 from his 2 overs.  In reply, Saints could only muster 123 being all out in the 20th over.

Saints recovered well and, in their second game, held Broadbridge Heath to 131 for 6 with 14 year old Ben Noble and 17 year old Freddy Nehls getting 2 wickets apiece.  Saints opener 17 year old Adam Chilcott then set off with a vengeance and took full toll of early half volleys and short pitched bowling alike, putting real pressure on all the bowlers.

While wickets fell at the other end, Adam kept scoring freely to keep Saints well ahead of the required scoring rate. He was out for 91 out of 120 with, at that point, extras being the only other notable scorer, the game was in Saints’ control and Michael Platt (15*) saw Saints safely home in the 17th over and with 5 wickets in hand.
