opened brightly for the Middies when the tenacious Trevor Smith took the first frame against Dave Heckford 48-30, the determined Heckford retaliated in the second frame by winning 48-12. The evergreen Bernie Everest had a tough battle with the Grins mighty Keith Gould losing 32-60 then in the following frame seeing the cue ball run unkindly when attempting to secure the final pink, this gave Gould the opportunity to close the frame 55-49.

Barry Williams came to the table knowing he had to produce top form to bring the host’s level, this he did in the first frame against Mick Tugwell by gaining the highest points scored in any one frame during the match by winning 68-44, the talented Tugwell then outwitted the brave Williams with a 46-17 reversal.

The pairing of Martin Payne and Kevin Jennings was always going to wet the appetite of the enthusiastic audience, it was the marauding Payne who clinched the first frame for the Middies 64-34, the second went to a black ball finale seeing Jennings being a tough nut to crack when he won 59-57.

A mouth watering first frame saw the dynamic Don Miller clawing back on the visitor’s Les Waites lead then lined up to take the final black, alas, the white cue ball came off the cushion and ended up in the middle pocket, the wily Waites winning 63-53 who then went on to win the second frame 52-20.The dogged Norman Green came up against the wizardry of Grins Bob Ashenden who built a fluent 32 break to take the opening frame 53-14 then moving on to take the second 61-40.

The match was well marshalled by referees Dennis Wakeford, Steve Barton and Roy Tucknott.
