A fabulous Friday at Weald Squash Club

There was a fabulous Friday of squash at Weald as new coaches Nic Davies and Sam Wilson ran a series of taster sessions for juniors, ladies and men.

The players were put through their paces and shown new shots in the sessions and are looking forward to Nic becoming a regular fixture at the club with new sessions in 2015.

This was followed by a demonstration of top level squash as the Weald’s first team took on Brighton 1. The home team was strengthened by Tim Garner (ex World no. 26) who showed how his quick recovery to the T gives such an advantage on court as he won in three. Diverted en route from Gibraltar to the BHA match, Weald’s home-grown Adam Newnham struggled to find his feet in the first, but stepped up the pace and used his harder hitting style to win the second on the tie-break. Unfortunately he could not retain the pace against an opponent who chased down every shot, losing 1-3.

Despite being lower in the order than usual, James Sweeney had his work cut out against the strong Brighton contingent in a see-saw match in which both players took turns to dominate the long, intense rallies. Eventually James found the upper hand and made short work of the last two games to win 3-2. Both Mark Wheeler and Sam Hanbury won in three in straight-forward matches.

As the first team consolidated their position in the top two of their division, the seconds also continued to do well as they beat Corals 5 4-1. Jon Liles played in his first match of the season and started well as he won in an intense four games, while Tom Knight battled through in a marathon five games to win 3-2. The thirds also did well, beating LA Fitness Gatwick 3 4-1 with Ben Nelson maintaining the pressure to win in five. However, the tables were turned as the thirds struggled to field a full strength team, suffering a defeat at the hands of LA Fitness Gatwick 4.
