Inigo Calderon’s quick throw in was controlled by Barnes who then cushioned the ball and unleashed a powerful strike while swivelling inside the area, leaving the Cherries’ keeper Lee Camp with no chance.

Eddie Howe’s men had gone in front through a well-worked set-piece in which Matt Richie fizzed past Tomasz Kuszczak, but the Poland international then denied the former Swindon winger from close range with an instinctive, double-handed save.

The Albion keeper also denied Brett Pitman in the second half after Richie slipped a ball past Gordon Greer, smothering the ball at the striker’s feet and forcing him into a limp prod of the ball.

The travelling Albion fans were left wincing late on as Kuszczak and Matt Upson almost gifted the home side a last gasp winner but Barnes’ sumptuous finish proved to be the concluding goal.
