Crystal Palace 1-2 Brighton rewind: Anthony Knockaert wonder strike beats Eagles

As we continue our look back at some of Brighton's classic matches, we revisit the Saturday afternoon back in March 2019 when Anthony Knockaert's stunner left Crystal Palace reeling and Roy Hodgson fuming.

Anthony Knockaert's sublime second-half strike saw Brighton to a 2-1 victory at Palace as Chris Hughton's team moved level on points with their rivals in a pulsating 'M23 derby'.

Glenn Murray only started the match as Florin Andone injured himself in the warm-up and it was Murray who made the breakthrough after 19 minutes with yet another goal against his former club.

Roy Hodgson's men levelled shortly after the interval as Albion midfielder Davy Propper upended Andros Townsend in the box and Luka Milivojevic made no mistake from the spot.

However, Knockaert had the final say as his brilliant effort - only his second goal of the season - won it for the Seagulls with 16 minutes to go.

Knockaert could indeed count himself lucky to still be on the pitch as he was only cautioned for wiping out Palace captain Milivojevic after just 28 seconds.

It was the quickest Premier League booking of the season and Hodgson said he was "incensed" by the decision not to send the Frenchman off.

"I was pleased to see Milivojevic get to his feet again," Hodgson said at the time. "It looked like a very dangerous one."

Albion went ahead on 19 minutes when Palace's James Tomkins failed to head clear Shane Duffy's punt up-field.

Murray had plenty to do but his composed finish from an acute angle beat Vicente Guaita for his 100th league goal for Brighton.

Palace were the better team in the early stages of the second half. Townsend caused problems throughout and it he who advanced with purpose into the box and Propper dangled out a leg and caught the England international. Referee Craig Pawson immediately signalled a penalty.

Milivojevic is ultra reliable from the spot and stroked home his eighth successful penalty of the season. The goal encouraged the home support but they were soon silenced by a moment of magic from Knockaert.

Hughton was about to replace the Albion winger but before the substitution could be made, Knockaert netted his goal-of-the-season contender.

He gathered the ball on the right, cut inside and curled his left-footed shot into the top corner. It was an absolute belter and one of Brighton's best goals since returning to the top flight.

A perfect way to win a match against your fiercest rivals.

"It is a very disappointing day," Hodgson added. "It was a poor performance in that we were not able to do enough with the amount of possession we had."
