Burgess Hill Town 0, Hendon 1: Tuck - '˜We're bitterly disappointed'

Burgess Hill Town assistant manager Stuart Tuck said his side were '˜bitterly disappointed' after his side lost to Hendon at the Green Elephants Stadium.

The Hillians knew a win would secure another season in the Ryman Premier but it was Hendon who were celebrating survival at the end of the night thanks to an 82nd minute own goal.

Now Ian Chapman’s men have to equal or better Needham Market’s result on Saturday to ensure survival.

Tuck said after the game: “We are bitterly disappointed. We wanted to win the game with the situation where we are in the league, we’ve just not been good enough.

“That was a chance for us to get three points but we just weren’t good enough.

“If you look at the game it wasn’t good but we probably deserved a draw.

“We’ve got to stop feeling sorry for ourselves. We’ve got to do more than just hang in there when we are at home. At one stage it looked as if the least we deserved was a point but that’s the way things have gone for us this year. We take our foot off the gas and other teams get goals.

“We have got to be more ruthless and we’ve got to be better.”

Burgess Hill host Tonbridge Angels on Saturday and they need to get a result. Tuck said: “We go into every game wanting to win.

“On paper Tonbridge would be a harder game for us but you never know. We seem to do okay against the teams at the top, we come alive.

“What has let us down this year is the results against the teams around us.

“In games we all take responsibility, myself, Chappers, Paul (Dollner) and John (Rattle) but I’m on the other side of it tonight as well because I have played. We all have to take responsibility for the results.”

But Tuck says they can’t quite put their fingers on what has gone wrong after what was a decent first half of the season.

He said: “Since Christmas the results just haven’t been good enough. We are trying to put our finger on it.

Nothing has changed from what we were doing last year. I don’t want to harp back to last year because that’s gone, but up until Christmas we had a reasonable points tally.

“We haven’t changed anything. Obviously when you don’t get a result in one or two games, confidence tends to dip. We give the players the freedom to go out and play, but we’ve just said to the boys in there, when you don’t play well - and that happens at any level - the least you can do is work your socks. And tonight I thought we were lacking in both departments.

“And whether that’s a confidence thing, because we’ve had not many good results lately, or whether it’s belief or the brutal truth of it, whether we’re not quite good enough.”
