BOWMAN ON THE ROAD: No sunshine for Crawley at Morecambe

For some while now the thought of traveling to Morecambe Bay mid week had been crashing around in my head.

A mixture of excitement but tinged with an element of in trepidation. But thanks to fellow Town supporter Mick O’Donnell and his trusty Ford Focus the 750 round trip turned into a doddle. We arrived back in Mid Sussex for 2.30am.

We left Crawley at 12.30 heading north M23, M25, M40, M6 (toll) stopping once for refreshments. Its amazing how sometimes you hit every traffic jam going and sometimes not a thing. It was the latter as we were along side Morecambe seafront at 6.00. Time for photos with the town’s legend Eric Morecambe. Most of the 30 strong Town support had gathered in the Hurley Flyer right outside the ground where we shared a nice hour. It was great to catch up with Liverpool based Alf one of our Northern exile’s.

The Globe Arena is a relative new build with most of the money going on a splendid main stand which looks great on the eye both inside and outside. It also houses around 250 away fans in comfort and under cover. The other three sides are all terracing, with most of the vocal home support behind the goal under cover. In my humble opinion it’s a ground that Morecambe Fc can be very proud of and can certainly take them into League one and perhaps beyond with little need for immediate updates. The weather was perfect for mid week football, clear, dry and mild.

On the field there is no getting away from the fact that Crawley failed to bring any intensity up north which allowed the Shrimps an easy night. We might have played some pretty football at times but failed to snap into tackles and gave them far too much time on the ball. That’s all Ok if you are soaking up well but on 42 mins a blatant goal keeping error gifted the hosts an undeserved lead. Then mid way through the 2nd period a long pass was not claimed by Flahvan which lead to confusion in the box and a second goal. Even though Murphy scored a smart goal on 84 mins the grand stand finish never materialised, The death knell came very late on when the hosts slotted a penalty.

A huge mention to the 30 strong away contingent who gave their team every support. As to the team, Mark will know that Town meekly gave up on taking anything out of our trip to the Globe. Must do better at Hartlepool United on Saturday.
