Speculation among Crawley fans had suggested he could be coming to the Checkatrade.com Stadium through Welsh connections between Evans and the Crawley Town caretaker manager Dean Saunders who is the former assistant manager of Wales.

In a statement on their website Port Vale’s chairman Norman Smurthwaite also denied national reports he is going to join the Valiants.

He was refused a new deal by Sheffield United despite being allowed to train with them following an outcry from high profile fan Jessica Ennis-Hill, the Olympic heptathlon gold medallist who has a stand named after her at Bramall Lane.

Yesterday Evans was linked to Maltese club Hibs but the government has ruled him out from playing abroad.

The Manchester Evening News has reported that Oldham Athletic are set to sign the player.
