Mark Yates delighted with Crawley Town’s performance against Reading

Crawley Town manager Mark Yates was understandably proud of his team’s display in beating Reading on the back of losing to other Championship sides Fulham and Brighton.

He said: “We were probably a bit more resilient, a bit more organised and we worked on a few things we needed to work on.

“That’s what pre-season’s about. It’s not about being ready for the first pre-season game, it’s about getting the game-time.

“Today we wanted to be tough to beat.

“Looking back on the two videos (of the Fulham and Brighton games) we were probably too open with the first two Championship sides so Reading were probably a bit unlucky in that we had played those two games and decided to approach it in a slightly different way.”

Yates reckoned his side were stronger and benefitted having players in their normal position at full-back, rather than midfielders Conor Henderson and Lewis Young filling in at the back.

He said: ““It was a better mentality, we had two recognised full-backs playing I thought our starting XI was better and we played with passion.

“My players are shattered and I want that every week - not just against Brighton or Reading but against teams like Wycombe and Portsmouth.

“If they give everything in every match then the crowd will be happy.”

Yates recognised the imporoved display compared with their recent performances and approved of the good work ethic shown and expects more of the same in the forthcoming league campaign.

He said: “I thought we played some really good stuff, we had some really good chances and looked more likely to score than they did.

“Just in the last few minutes we played in the wrong areas which meant our goalkeeper was called into action.

“There were many positives but we’re not going to get carried away!”

Yates was delighted with the performances and attitude shown by Crawley’s two full-backs Durrell Berry, (ex-Aston Villa and Cheltenham) and Belgian Brian Van De Bogaert who drove from Belgium on the day of the game.
