“Lots of good things. I’m not worried about results, I’m worried about performances and players taking things on board we are asking of them. And on the whole they did that.”

Yates also criticised some aspects of Reds’ play.

He said: “At times I thought we could have had more passes and been a bit more patient.

“We could have got that ball in the final ball in the box a bit more. Against a really good side we created plenty. We caused them a few problems.

“We conceded a sloppy goal just before half-time with a throw-in when we gave away possession on the half-way line and the next thing you know the ball is in the back of the net.

“And then there was one at the end which for the boys was hard to take.”

Overall Yates was pleased with the the showing on the magnificent Checkatrade.com Stadium pitch.

He said: “But it wasn’t a bad result against a good side. Then again it’s not about results and there were lots of pleasing things for us today.”
