The duo came off the bench near the end of the game in place of Gary Alexander and Josh Simpson and were instrumental in the two goals which were scored within seven minutes of them coming on the pitch.

He said: “Credit where credit’s due to the lads who came on. One’s scored it (Proctor) and the other’s made a good run (Torres). You need that especially at places like this. You’ve got to have players on the bench who can affect the play when they go on.

Coventry are a good side. If you add the points back on they are a top-six side. You can’t come and think you are going to play all over them because that doesn’t happen against Coventry. They are patient and move you about. It took us 15-20 minutes to get used to that and while we did we restricted them to long-range shots.

“Always looking dangerous, Christie down the right side’s a good player.

“Conceding two goals from set-pieces is not like us. Up to now we have defended them well.”

Delighted Whittingham added: “I’m proud of everyone one of them. At home and away to be able to that, especially here - I don’t think Coventry will have lost too many 2-0 leads.”
