The over-35s final was a cagey affair in the first half, with Town battling against the elements. Town’s clear objective was to get into the dressing room at half-time without conceding.

Somewhat against the run of play Town’s Greg Manton managed to volley home from a Steve Sargent corner two minutes before the break. Town walked down the tunnel knowing the wind should provide an advantage in the second half.

The next 45 minutes were all one-way traffic but Town just could not find the net. Town even flashed a penalty high over the bar on 60 minutes.

Against the run of play Rustington were given a very soft penalty. They equalised and managed to hold on until full-time.

With no extra time the game was to be decided on penalty kicks. Stafford Browne, Danny Simmonds, Greg Manton, Steve Sargent and Chris Dicker were all successful from 12 yards. Town ran out victorious thanks to two poor penalties from Rustington.

Town Vets are the champions of Sussex again – and hope to make it a hat-trick of titles next year.
