Eventful day for Charlie as dad’steam follow up in glorious style

Rangers followed up their 8-1 midweek demolition of whipping boys Worthing United by fielding an unchanged team and completing the double over lowly Hailsham.

It was a mixed day for Charlie Pitcher, son of home boss Geoff. The youngster was lively throughout and scored two goals. But he later missed a penalty when given a chance to complete his hat-trick and also picked up a booking.

Rangers went ahead after only 12 minutes, with Andy Mott finally credited with the goal that came via a deflection.

Then on 25 minutes Pitcher closed down a defender and ran on 20 yards before beating the keeper from the edge of the box.

Pick of the goals came nine minutes later. A good move started on the left and then Sam Jeremiah laid off the ball for Pitcher to score with a well struck volley.

That was game in the bag but Jeremiah made absolutely certain early in the second half when he poked the ball in from a goalmouth scramble.

The visitors did peg back a consolation goal through Trevor McCreadie but Rangers also had a chance to make it a nap hand when awarded a penalty.

Skipper Aaron Walsh was all set to fulfil his normal duties but boss Pitcher opted to let his son have the chance of a first senior hat-trick. Sadly for both, young Pitcher fluffed his chance by striking his spot kick against the bar and over.

Brannon O’Neill continued in his new role playing just in front of the back four and again was a major player. Newcomer Dan Vinten had another good game in the left back slot O’Neill had previously been occupying.

A total of 12 goals in successive games is Rangers’ best ever tally in senior football.

Rangers: Gordon; Dodd, Walsh, Lawrence, Vinten; O’Neill; Rose, C Pitcher (Maskell), Mott (Pears); Jeremiah (Fugl), Perry.

Middy Starman: Brannon O’Neill.
