Greg’s star role isicing on cake as young Hillianshit the target

There were plenty of positives to come out of Saturday’s match but top of the list easily was the full debut of youth team player Greg Luer.

The youngster instantly looked confident and perfectly at ease in the higher grade and in the end emerged as Hillians’ man-of-the-match.

Manager Ian Chapman said afterwards: “I think the boy is a real quality player and was probably the main difference between the teams.”

The boss was also delighted to keep a third successive clean sheet although without the experience of Stuart Tuck and Toby Phillips in central defence, they often trod something of a thin line. Also missing through injury was Pat Harding, whose four goals at Whistable earned Hillians a 4-2 win in early November.

This time it was a largely young Hill team who scored twice after notching only four in their previous nine games.

But the opener on 17 minutes was pure Route 1 as Mark Zawadski’s long clearance was headed on by Ryan Thomson to leave Max Miller with a clear run to goal. The joy for Miller was clear to see as this was his first goal for Hill this season.

With Luer prominent, Nick Wheeler, as always, a threat wide out and and right back Neil Watts once again superb, the first half went well for Hill.

However, they did wobble at the back a few times and in one particularly perilous five-minute spell it needed a superb save by Zawadski to deny David Raggett’s header.

Hill too often make a sticky start to the second half and this was no exception before
