'˜He doesn't have to tell me who he is signing' says Hillians chairman Newell

Burgess Hill Town chairman Kevin Newell has said boss Ian Chapman doesn't need to tell him which players he is signing.

Chapman told Hillians TV after their final day draw with Tonbridge Angels that his side needed a ‘personnel change’.

He said: “We need to have a personnel change with players. The players have given me everything. A few times this year I have moaned. Sometimes we have come up short with a lack of quality rather than effort and for me now it shows we really must make changes.

“We need to get probably four or five players in and obviously that means a few will leave.”

But Newell will not get involved with the signings.

He told Middy Sport: “He doesn’t have to tell me who he is signing.

“I know there are some chairmen in this league who require their manager to confirm the line-up with them on a Friday night before match day.

“Ian doesn’t have to do that. It’s ludicrous to suggest I know more about football than him.

“I place my reliance on him. He is an excellent football manager.”

Newell also suggested there will be some signings sooner rather than later.

He said: “We have had excellent support this year from our large home crowds and we want to keep them on board by showing them we are making signings and improving the team.”

Newell told Hillians TV earlier in the week that despite finishing in the relegation zone, his side will be playing Premier Division football next season.
