Kyle Bennett believes the prospect of facing one of the Premier League’s big guns will provide an extra spur for Pompey to progress past Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup.

After coming through their first round clash against Macclesfield, the Blues have been drawn at home to a club who are currently level on points and only one place behind on goal difference in the League Two standings.

While the winger believes Pompey could have got an easier draw, he is confident Paul Cook’s side will have all the motivation they need to reach the next round when the clubs from the top two divisions enter the competition.

Bennett said: ‘I’m happy with it. It would have been nice to get a lower-ranked team.

‘But we also feel we can beat any team.

‘We’ve got a home tie, which is good and it’s not a League One team.

‘But we saw it was a tough game against Macclesfield and I watched the Salford game when they beat Notts County, who just beat us.

‘There is a real chance for us to be in the draw to play against one of the big boys.

‘You can’t help but think about reaching the third round at this stage.

‘But I don’t think anyone will be getting ahead of themselves.

‘I just think it gives us a little bit of extra motivation.’

While League Two remains the priority this season, Bennett is targeting a successful run in the competition.

He said: ‘Let’s be honest – we probably know we are not going to win it.

‘But the Pompey fans love the competition and this club won it not so long ago, so it would be nice to get a good run. We have to make sure we get through.’

The ties will be played over the weekend of December 4-7.
