Warden Park’s record of producing strong, successful girls’ football teams continues with the U14 girls’ team reaching the Sussex County Final after the narrowest of victories over Tanbridge House.
It was difficult to separate the teams in what was a fast paced, high scoring game.
Both produced quality football and the match was ultimately decided with a penalty shoot out .
Warden Park had a 2-0 advantage midway through the 1st half though the goal difference could have been much greater with Warden Park missing chance after chance along with a penalty. Within a minute of this miss, Tanbridge scored a goal direct from a corner, narrowing the advantage and bringing them back into the game. At half time, the game was poised at 2-1 to Warden Park.
In the second half, play evened out and Tanbridge grew stronger, first equalising then taking the lead 3-2.
The Warden Park girls showed great determination and character to fight back and then edge ahead 4-3.
With just one minute to go a long throw went into the box and a Tanbridge striker hammered the ball home to make it 4-4 at the final whistle. Extra time did not produce a winner and it was only after an incredible 18 penalties and some excellent goalkeeping that Warden Park secured a win, 2-1 on penalties.
Warden Park meet Dorothy Stringer in the final, a repeat of the u12 final from last season.
