Seconds best as Heath and theGreen both crash to defeat

There were defeats by three-goal margins for Haywards Heath and Wivelsfield Green on Sunday but at least Heath’s 2nd team bucked the trend by bouncing back with four points from a double header to move up three places into mid-table.

A Sian Ford-Hunt penalty was enough to give them victory over Rottingdean in the opening game, in which Keveena Mosen played her first outfield game since the turn of the year to earn the player-of-the-match award.

The second game finished in a 2-2 draw and this time Heidi Tucker was introduced for her first outfield game for more than a year and hit both goals to earn the player-of-the-match accolade.

Gemma Kerr had her best game of the season at the back and keeper Gill Scovell also played well.

Rottingdean struck once in each half to come from behind but Tucker’s second earned a point and it could have been all three had Claudia Vogel’s last minute strike not crashed against the bar.

The 1st team lost 3-0 at Crockenhill as injuries and work commitments forced numerous changes. Teenagers Katie Harding and Phoebe Smith made their Premier debuts and both worked hard in the roll-on roll-off system that Heath adopted.

Heath’s star performer was Anne Marie Lestic and it was pleasing to see Mel Bramley return for a 30-minute appearance after sustaining an injury in the opening match of the season. Nat Bagwell was also returning from a long term injury.

Wivelsfield Green lost 4-1 at leaders Worthing. It was probably a little flattering for the hosts against a squad that included 11 players who took part in The Nuts Challenge, a 14km military assault course, the previous day to raise money for Woodlands Meed School in Burgess Hill. They hope to have raised around £300.

Emma Chrimes scored the consolation goal.
