A twitter account called @sunderlandafc11 posted on Friday: "Rumours Tom Nichols signing from Crawley Town undisclosed fee 2 1/2 year contract #SAFC #CTFC #RTG"

But Konyar said there was nothing in the rumour but would not be surprised if it was true the League One club were interested in the 27-year-old.

He said: "It’s news to me. I have heard nothing other than rumours. There is nothing serious or concrete but it wouldn’t surprise me."

Nichols has been one of the key players in Crawley Town's form this season and their FA Cup run after John Yems snapped him up after he was released by Bristol Rovers.

But it looks like the Reds will be bringing one more player during the transfer window.

Konyar said: "We will get one more in today and that’s it. We might have a few going out on loan but obviously there are another 13 days left of the window."

Max Watters left Crawley Town on Saturday to join Cardiff City for an undisclosed fee. Columnist Geoff Thornton asked why fees have to be undisclosed and although Konyar can relate, he said the deal had to be that way.

He said: "It was the terms of the transfer. If someone is paying a certain amount of money and they don’t want to disclose that is totally up to them.

"I can relate [to Thornton's comment], but at the same if the buyers parting with money and they don’t want to disclose it and the sellers want the money, I understand it."

But Konyar believes the Watters transfer, believed to be around £1million, is significant for Crawley. He said: "I think the deal is a benchmark for the future. Obviously its an undisclosed deal but a positive one for the football club.

"We are not in desperate need for finance but this was the right deal for the club going forward."
