Tom Nichols' goal midway through the first half was enough to give Crawley all three points and McNerney was pleased with his teammates performance.

"It was a win we had to grind out," explained McNerney. "I thought it was a tough game. I think they are a very good side...[but] we defended well and we defended deep."

Whilst, McNerney started the season out of the side, injuries to Tom Dallison and Tony Craig have seen the 31-year-old thrown into the spotlight and undoubtedly deliver at the heart of an impressive Crawley defence.

"It's been tough watching from the sidelines," stated McNerney. "We are very strong in the position I play in so I've had to be patient.

"I think the manager has tried to keep the core of players together [over the last couple of years]...and [now] you know each other's game. It's working well at the moment. There's good partnerships all over the pitch."

The win against Salford leaves Crawley just seven points of the play-offs and with plenty of the season still to go, a trip to Wembley is still a possibility.

However, as McNerney states the next two matches at home to Mansfield Town and Walsall are vital to Crawley's final standing and potential promotion push.

"We’re a match for anyone on our day. It’s nice to be back at home..to be on our pitch and implement our game," he added.
