“Although the club are saddened by his departure, they are also delighted he has secured a full-time coaching role with Brighton & Hove Albion.

“Adam deserves this opportunity to return to full-time employment within the professional game, following his premature retirement due to injury. The club cannot thank him enough for steering them through difficult times last season and wish him every success going forward.

“The board have moved swiftly to find the successor to carry on Adam’s good work.

“The club have consulted Adam and sought the advice of numerous respected figures within the football community. With pre-season only two weeks away, it was important to act quickly but to be considered in our appointment.

“The club wanted the right candidate, who would follow their ethos of developing young players, as Adam and Jon have done so successfully. The club feels it is imperative that as much continuity is kept as possible, whilst continuing to move the club forward.

“The club are delighted to announce that former Albion, Eastleigh and Lewes defender Gary Elphick will be joining as both a player and to work alongside Jon Meeney as joint first team manager.

“Matt Piper will also be joining the management team to assist Jon and Gary.

“We believe the attributes that the three of them possess cover all the requirements the club were looking for.

“Although Jon is currently abroad, he has been in constant contact with Gary, Matt and the board and we are all excited for the coming seasons.”
