Glee for Snee as Mannings Heath golfers defy poor weather

Playing off 15, he posted ten pars and two birdies to reduce his handicap by two shots.

Three players signed for 41 and it took seven levels of countback before a one-point advantage on the six hardest holes saw Steve Batley pip Richard Kindon to runners-up spot, with Steve Holloway fourth. Fifth-placed Adam Sowton played the back nine in three under gross for 40.

Two of the club’s category one golfers showed their quality in Sunday’s event with five-handicap Steve Goodman beating three-handicap Aaron Peacock on countback after both signed for 41.

Goodman was round in level par with four birdies while Peacock was two under with six. Simon Rooke, Peter Wilson and James McCarthy took the other prizes.

The ladies had rain and wind to contend with and the damp conditions yielded a tight finish with the top three only separated by a point.

Captain Margaret Brown’s better back nine saw her beat Julie Law on countback after both carded 34 points with Meriel Jolley third on 33.

George Willis, playing off ten, took the junior Stableford with a 39 that included ten pars and nothing worse than a bogey. Ashley Head and Tom Packham claimed the other places with 36 and 35.

The seniors’ stableford on Monday saw Simon Douglas head a strong field with 41 points and reduce his 13 handicap by a shot. He could afford to blob the 18th but Paul Holmes and Eddie Searles were only a point behind with Holmes clinching the runner-up spot on countback thanks to a level par back nine.
